Assuming that most people rinse dishes before putting them in the dishwasher, I have no doubt that handwashing (without keeping the water running, of course) uses less fossil fuel energy, and probably less water too. If the dishes were just used, they need not be soaked, and so a sponge with some soap and water works great. Filling up the sink is not necessary.
If one has a large load, the dishwasher might well be better, or at least more efficient.

I have been using Simplysensitive and Ecover washing powder for two weeks now and I am amazed at the results,as the mother of a 1 year old son I did'nt honestly hold out much hope of its stain removing power, but it has left me stunned,no only is it fabulous at removing really tough stains like baby juices and food, but Im happy to report it also seems to have helped with my sons skin.He suffers from exzma and Iv found that with most laundry detergents,if they have to be strong enough to remove the stains they very often effect his skin badly,Im just over the moon with the results of this laundry detergent,I will definatley only be using this brand from now on.From Rachel,Liverpool,England.

Moo Moo Drinker, I'd love to see the glass bottles come back, especially if they allow for refills. In fact, I'm a big proponent of all beverages being delivered via refillable glass containers. The savings in terms of money, transportation, and the environment would be HUGE. One big, big factor preventing everyone from using refillable glass bottles though is the spread of disease that would increase from multiple open containers coming into contact with the source of the beverage.

Still, I think there must be a way for us to be able to simply re-use glass bottles and get them refilled in a sanitary way.

If you leave the hot water running the whole time you're washing your cup, it will use a lot of water and electricity. But if you just soap up the mug, scrub it, then turn on the water to rinse it, you'll save a lot o' water and energy. Also, there's not really a need to use hot water.

I also have to admit that I use a reusable mug at my work, but I avoid your problem by just not washing my cup.
