Growing up in Oklahoma City, yes I admit to spending part of my childhood there, we lived near a mall. On occasion, my siblings and I would check out the dumpster, behind the bookstore.

Instead of returning unsold magazines and books, the bookstore would rip-off the front covers, and toss the perfectly good merchandise in the dumpster.

We would spend gleeful hours, sifting through the romance novels, to find Mad Magazine and D.C. Comics.

I'm much older now, dumpsters are more toxic, I'll stick with Free Trees.

You liar. You tried to blame it on me until I declared and proved my independence and innocence from such accusation without representation.

Wow, the Free Tree. That reminds me of when I was much younger we had a really nice tree in our yard. It provided some nice shades where all the kids would play under it and climbed it. My dad put some benches under it and people would sit and chat about the future of America, it was really nice. sort of like a park where you can go and relax. But then one day I was being playful with my hatchet and debarked it. The tree then died and my dad wanted to know if I knew anything about it. I told him I cannot tell a lie and admitted it was me who killed the cherry tree.

Dang, that's a good idea. I don't think we have anything like that, but we have a Free Dumpster at my work. I got some computer monitors from it, and have seen people get free chairs from it. Sorta the same, yeah?

I just discovered the "Free Tree". My wife and I are furnishing our new apartment in San Francisco, and we are trying to do it as free as possible, so far only $140 spent. We have a bed, hand me down kitchen-ware, stereo, t.v., coffee table and a few other things all free. How?

Your street corner. In the city, people put their stuff out on the corner instead of paying for hauling, and hope someone takes it away.

Today, I was walking along my new neighborhood, and spotted a chair and table on the sidewalk. Their was a woman painting the entrance to her building, in front of the chair and table, and I asked her if the furniture was free. "Yes, that's the Free Tree. People who live on the block place their stuff besides that tree." She responded.

See if you've got a Free Tree in your neighborhood - or plant one of your own.

[...] Next up is a series of submissions about recycling and reusing: a messenger bag made from recycled plastic bags, a blog post with examples of turning trash into art (I especially like the dress made out of umbrellas), and a post at Eco Joe's with a brief summary of websites for reusing and recycling.
