Google supports some Earth Hour

That’s right, it looks like good ol’ Google has turned off its lights to show its support for Earth Hour. What is Earth Hour? Welp, on Saturday, March 29 (today), at 8 P.M. (your local time), everyone is supposed to turn off their lights. More than 100 cities across North America will participate in Earth Hour in an effort to raise awareness of energy conservation.

Will it accomplish anything permanent? Nay. BUT, it should be pretty cool to see tons of cities go dark, plus it will be interesting to see how much electricity just a single hour saves.

Anyhoo, it’s neat to see Google helping out. Bravo, I say, bravo.

  1. Homer Simspon Says:

this is more dumb than dumb and dumber.
“raise” awareness but accomplish absolutely nothing.

as a matter in fact…I shall turn on all the lights that I can legally turn on…during this hour.

  2. ecojoe Says:

Hey, what about your hero Ghandi, who raised awareness by being non-violent and “doing nothing”. Perhaps a black Google will put its stock in the black, and it’ll stop dropping.

  3. ...srsly? Says:

OMFG, I’M NOT VIOLET!!! Ghandi doesnt afraid of anything.

    To homer simpson,
Seriously? Why do you have to be an ass hole
about it? If you want to be a dick
then do it to someone who actually deserves it.
Because honestly what the fuck has google done
to you? I mean maybe back in the day in
3rd grade google was a bully to you and beat
    you up but no, nothing
    so shut the fuck up!

  5. ecojoe Says:

I was actually roommates with “Homer Simpson”, and Google actually was a bully to him. So I understand his anger, and feel his pain.

  6. Adam Says:

i feel bad for having my plasma tv on but the UNC game was on…what can I do. Why dont we turn out lights out…when it IS light out?

  7. That guy Says:

This already exists. Go to BlackGoogle.com. Or Blackle.com. Or black-google.blogspot.com. All of these do this all the time anyway, why are we so impressed when Google does it for an hour?

  8. Matt Says:

If there’s a measurable decrease in the energy usage anywhere, I’ll eat my hat. This is just theater from Google, one of the biggest energy consumers in the world. I bet Al Gore’s 10,000 square foot energy hog home doesn’t go dark either.

  9. wannabedesi Says:

There’s nothing wrong with raising awareness for it. I’m a little miffed that I missed it. Howevah, alot has been done to the benefit of the world by raising awareness..Gandhi being the perfect example

@Adam: No UNC game is ever worth watching, even if it’s not Earth Hour. That’s what I think, as a bitter NC State fan :(
@That guy: Yeah, those sites are already doing it full time, but it’s big when Google does it because so many people will see it.
@Matt: True, it is just theater from Google. BUT, if it gets a ton of people’s attention, then ’tis worthy theater.
@wannabedesi: I’m ashamed to admit it, but…….. I missed it too.

  11. Frank Says:

    @Matt:
    Eat your fucking hat.
If any of you idiots who say this doesn’t work,
then you obviously didn’t even look at the website.
They’ve saved a SHITLOAD of energy from AUSTRALIA ALONE last year.

  12. Edouard Says:

Well, I didn’t follow it either… my bad.

I feel better as I switched last year all my lights to fluorescent and my stuff to very efficient appliances.

Yes to this initiative if it can make people aware of the situation at hand… and act accordingly… :)
