I’m not 100% sure what Together Green is going to be about. Their motto is, “Act today, shape tomorrow”. Empty platitude that sounds good.
Anyhoo, if you act fast, you may well be able to get a free t-shirt from them. The first 1,000 people to register will get one. Simply move your mouse pointer to the above image and click the left mouse button.
That’s right, it looks like good ol’ Google has turned off its lights to show its support for Earth Hour. What is Earth Hour? Welp, on Saturday, March 29 (today), at 8 P.M. (your local time), everyone is supposed to turn off their lights. More than 100 cities across North America will participate in Earth Hour in an effort to raise awareness of energy conservation.
Will it accomplish anything permanent? Nay. BUT, it should be pretty cool to see tons of cities go dark, plus it will be interesting to see how much electricity just a single hour saves.
Anyhoo, it’s neat to see Google helping out. Bravo, I say, bravo.
This is what this site is all about; getting some freefood, and helping the environment at the same time. Check it.
Buzzy Seeds is giving away some free vegetable seeds or free flower seeds. You pick. All you have to do is take a short survey, fill out your address, and bam, free seeds are coming your way. I chose to get some free vegetable seeds, so I can see how hard it is to grow some of my own food. Plus, I am very hungry, and flowers don’t fill you up the way verduras do.
Cap’n Planet Says:A huge chunk of your eco-footprint comes from the food you buy. Lots of food is shipped from far away, so a lot of resources are used to get the food to you. Growing your own vegetables = very local food = lower pollution.
This made the front page on Care2, vote for it with all yer might!Â
When many people think about a “green” house, they picture a small hut made out of mud where people sit on dirt floors, desperately trying to not use any energy. But by doing some careful planning and designing, and paying about 10% more on construction costs, this family’s home uses 50% less water and a whopping 90% less electricity than a similar-sized “normal” home. Some of the things they did are:
capturing rainwater and snow melt to flush toilets or water the lawn
“recycling” heat from hot water to help the water heater
If you’re thinking about building a home in the near future, and you’d like to cut the water bill in half and the electricity bill by 90%, then here’s how. I plan on one day following some of the tips in the video to make my house as cheap (and eco-friendly) as possible, while maintaining that normal home look.
Until today, it’s been illegal for North Carolinians to water their lawns with gray water. But it looks like the extended drought and water restrictions have been enough to change lawmakers’ minds. According to the The News and Observer, state officials will “tweak state laws that suggest it’s an illegal practice” to reuse gray water from bathing or washing dishes.
So if you’re trying to conserve water, and you live in North Carolina, feel free to grab a bucket and collect and reuse gray water from washing dishes or bathing or taking a shower (perhaps a Navy shower? Yeah?). Dump it on your yellow, withered stalks of grass, pour it under a brown, crackly bush, or use it to wash yo’ dusty car. Just remember, you can do this with GRAY water, but please don’t reuse BLACK water (water from toilets). That’s still illegal in “The Old North State”.
Far too often, when people hear the terms “eco-friendly” or “green“, they think of “tree-hugging liberals”. Even in the news, environmental ideas are touted (or degraded) because of perceived connections with “the far left”. This is bad logic, to think that only Starbucks-drinking, Mac-blogging, futuristic-glasses-wearing eco-hipsters (and hippies) care about the environment. Why must people be lumped into either Conservatives or Liberals? I guarantee you that the vast majority of people, whether they know it or not, have a mix of opinions that have elements of liberalism, conservatism, and perhaps even joeism.
Makes our country stronger. USA #1!!!! By investing in research in alternative energy (solar, wind, tidal), the good ol’ U.S.A. can help supply its growing energy-needs while cutting energy costs. Plus, we won’t be sending a bajillion dollars to such repressive regimes such as Saudi Arabia and Mr. Chavez.
Leave the world in good shape for the future. Everyone wants their kids (and grandkids) to live in a t-riffic world. By conserving wetlands, forests, and nature in general, we can bequeath a pristine Earth for future generations.
Since most of y’all probably stopped reading awhile ago, I’ll cut this short and stop here. Let me know if you think of other non-political reasons for gettin’ green.
Earthships are houses made with discarded tires, bottles, and cans, put together with lots of dirt. Many of them are self-sufficient, creating their own energy, and capturing their own rain-water. Since they’re made from reused/free materials, and supply their own electricity, heating, and water, they help conserve natural resources while also saving chunks of money. I’m down for anything that helps the environment AND saves me some dinero.
But I digress. I now present to you, courtesy of Earthship.net, “Earthships 101”.
